Martin McDonagh‘s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri was released in the US on November 10, 2017. In Europe, the movie arrived only in January 2018, but in such a short time it has grossed already 123 million dollars. This is the third movie for McDonagh, this first one without Colin Farrell.
In an effort to track down who raped and murdered her daughter, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) rent the advertisement space on three billboards right outside the town of Ebbing, Missouri. Where she lives. Mildred accuses the Sheriff (Woody Harrelson) of not doing anything to catch the killer of her daughter. This causes a largely adverse reaction among the citizens of the little town, not least one of the sheriff’s deputies. The hot-headed Jason Dixon (Sam Rockwell).
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri is the biggest surprise of 2017. The script reminds about the best movies of the Coen’s brothers, the acting of the main protagonists is excellent and the work McDonagh did behind the camera shows how mature is now this director. A movie that brings to the cinema industry something new that will remain forever.
It’s the real favorite. The story, the cinematography, the interpretations of the actors, the original score. This movie has not a single flaw. Truth is that The Shape of Water and Dunkirk won’t step back that easily and probably we will assist to some sort of assignation puzzle. If Three Billboards gets the best picture, Del Toro will get the best director. If The Shape of Water will get the best picture, Nolan will get the best director and McDonagh the best original screenplay. This is what would happen in a fair world. But Hollywood is often not that fair.
The actor Caleb Landry Jones who plays Red in this movie took part in another movie that has been nominated for an Oscar: The Florida Project, where Defoe is nominated for best-supporting-actor.
